About the Driver Theory Test

To acquire a complete Irish driving license, you must initially undergo and pass the driver theory test. This examination, conducted via computer, evaluates your understanding of various aspects of driving. It is crafted in alignment with current traffic laws and the Rules of the Road – the official guide for road users, serving as the foundation for road safety in Ireland. You can download it here:

  • Rules of the Road (pdf)
  • Rules of the Road (Irish version; pdf)

The questions you encounter are knowledge-based and will be randomly selected from a pool of nearly 800 questions spanning five categories:

  •  Control of the vehicle
  • Legal matters/rules of the road
  •  Managing risk
  •  Safe and responsible driving
  •  Technical matters

How the Driver Theory Test Works

The driver theory test is administered on a computer, utilizing either a touch screen or a mouse and keyboard. Proficiency in computer use is not a prerequisite for taking the test. Prior to the test commencement, a brief tutorial will be presented to offer instructions on its operation. To acquaint yourself with the test format, you will have the option to respond to two practice questions. If any questions or concerns arise at this stage, staff will be available for assistance.

The test comprises 40 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within a 45-minute timeframe. Each question presents four possible answers, with only one being correct. A square box is positioned next to each option, and you are required to mark the one you believe is the correct answer. Changing your response is allowed. If uncertain about a question, you have the option to skip it and return to it later. Prior to concluding the test, you can review and modify any uncertain answers. If you have answered all questions to the best of your ability with time to spare, you can conclude the test and leave early.

To successfully pass the test, a minimum score of 35 out of 40 is required.

Test Day

Watch the following about what to expect at the test centre on the day of your test:

There are five stages in the driver theory test process:

Arrival

It is recommended to arrive at the center 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. Upon arrival, staff members will greet you, confirm your appointment time, and emphasize the importance of punctuality. Late arrivals will not be allowed to take the exam, resulting in the forfeiture of the test fee. Additionally, companions are n permitted inside the test center; anyone accompanying you must wait outside.

Identification

Ensure you bring the appropriate identification. Acceptable forms include the Public Services Card (PSC), Irish Passport (or other passports valid for international use), Irish Passport Cards, or National Identity Cards from EU/EEA Member States or Switzerland. Failure to present valid identification will result in being denied entry to the exam, leading to a loss of fees.

Check-in

Upon arrival, you will undergo a check-in process where you must provide the necessary proof of identity. Personal belongings are not allowed in the test room, and staff will provide you with a key for a secure locker.

Verification

Before beginning the test, you will meet the Test Centre Administrator (TCA), sign once again, and have your photograph taken to verify your identity.

The Test

Once your test details are confirmed, the Test Centre Administrator will guide you to your workstation, explaining how the computer equipment operates. The test commences after a brief tutorial, during which you can familiarize yourself with the testing process. If you encounter any issues or require assistance, simply raise your hand, and the administrator will provide help.

The Result

Following the completion of the test, the administrator will promptly provide you with a score report.

Test Results

Following the completion of the driver theory test at the test center, you will promptly receive your test result along with a score report detailing your performance in the five question categories.

Pass

Upon successfully passing, you will be issued a pass certificate. This allows you to apply for your Learner Permit through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) website. The application process requires your Public Services Card and verified MyGovID. Once obtained, you can commence learning to drive on Irish roads. The validity of your certificate extends for two years from the test pass date. Failure to apply for your Learner Permit within this timeframe necessitates a retake of the test, entailing additional fees.

If you misplace your theory test certificate, you can request a replacement by contacting the Candidate Service Team. A non-refundable fee of €15 applies for the replacement certificate, payable via Mastercard or Visa Credit/Debit Cards.

Fail

In the event of a failure, the report outlines the areas that require improvement. It is advisable to practice these topics before scheduling another driver theory test, with a mandatory waiting period of 3 working days before reattempting. There is no limit on the number of attempts allowed.

Appealing a Result

If dissatisfied with the results, you have the right to appeal. This can be done by speaking to the driver theory test supervisor and completing an appeal form at the test center or by contacting the Candidate Service Team. You must initiate the appeal within 10 working days of the test date. The re-marking results will be communicated within 5 to 10 working days. An appeal incurs a €15 fee, refundable if the result is overturned, payable by Mastercard or Visa Credit/Debit Cards. A corrected driver theory test certificate will be issued if the original result is deemed incorrect.
